What Is SET Planning?

SET Planning, or Senior Education and Training Planning, is a process in education, that helps high school students plan their future education and career pathways. It typically involves students in Year 10, as they prepare to transition into their senior years of schooling (Years 11 and 12). The SET Plan is designed to be a personalized roadmap that outlines the student's goals, aspirations, and the steps needed to achieve them.

Key Components of SET Planning:

  • Career Exploration: Students explore different career options and identify fields of interest.
  • Educational Pathways: They consider various educational pathways, including academic, vocational, and combined options.
  • Goal Setting: Students set short-term and long-term goals related to their education and career aspirations.
  • Course or Subject Selection: They choose subjects for Years 11 and 12 that align with their goals and interests.
  • Skill Development: The plan includes identifying skills and competencies they need to develop to achieve their career goals.
  • Support and Resources: Students are guided on developing their SETP using available support and resources, including Careers expo visits, Industry talks, TAFE and UNI experience days and career guidance via Certificate II FSK which is a compulsory course for all year 10 students at Mount Morgan State High School.

Why is SET Planning Important?

SET Planning is important as it helps all students no matter what pathways they choose by:

  • Supporting in Personalising Learning Pathways: SET Planning ensures that students have a tailored educational plan that aligns with their personal interests and career aspirations, making learning more relevant and engaging.
  • Informed Decision Making: Through participation in FSK, Careers Expos, Industry talks and site visits students are supported to make informed decisions about their education and career by providing them with necessary information and guidance.
  • Goal Orientation: Through the process students are encouraged to set clear goals, which work to assist students to stay motivated and focused on their studies, knowing how their efforts contribute to their future aspirations.
  • Skill Development: Identifying required skills early helps students to work on developing these skills throughout their senior years, enhancing their readiness for future challenges.
  • Transition Support: The process supports students in transitioning smoothly from junior secondary to senior secondary education, reducing the risk of disengagement.
  • Parental Involvement: SET Planning often involves parents and guardians, ensuring that students have a support system to help them achieve their goals.
  • Career Readiness: It prepares students for life beyond school, whether they choose to pursue further education, training, or enter the workforce directly.
